Need a muhurat?
For a wedding, griha pravesh, shop opening or any important start, a muhurat should be checked against your own birth chart too. Share your birth details on WhatsApp for a personal muhurat.
The word Panchang means “five limbs”. For any moment it gives:
Tithi — the lunar day; every 12° of Moon–Sun separation is one tithi, 30 in a lunar month.
Vara — the weekday, each ruled by a planet (Ravivar by Sun, Somvar by Moon and so on).
Nakshatra — the Moon's lunar mansion, one of 27 divisions of 13°20′.
Yoga — one of 27 divisions based on the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes.
Karana — half a tithi; there are 11 karanas.
Panchang is used to choose a shubh muhurat for weddings, griha pravesh, naming ceremonies, vehicle purchase and business openings, and to fix festival dates such as Ekadashi, Purnima and Amavasya. For an important event, the muhurat should also suit the birth charts of the people involved — see marriage muhurat and griha pravesh muhurat.
Frequently asked questions about Panchang
What is Panchang?Panchang (Panchangam, 'five limbs') is the Hindu almanac that gives five attributes of each moment: tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana.
What is a tithi?A lunar day. Each tithi is a 12° increase in the angle between the Moon and the Sun, so there are 30 tithis in a lunar month: 15 in Shukla paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna paksha (waning).
What is a karana?Half of a tithi, i.e. 6° of Moon–Sun separation. There are 11 karanas: 7 movable ones that repeat and 4 fixed ones.
What is the yoga in Panchang? One of 27 divisions of 13°20′ based on the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes. It is different from the planetary yogas in a kundli.
What is Rahu Kaal?A period of about 1.5 hours each day, one-eighth of daytime, traditionally avoided for starting new work. Its position changes with the weekday.
Is Panchang the same for every city? No. Sunrise, sunset and the local time of each change depend on the location, so always check Panchang for your own city.
What is the difference between Amanta and Purnimanta months? In the Amanta system (common in South and West India) a lunar month ends on Amavasya; in the Purnimanta system (common in North India) it ends on Purnima.
Can I use this Panchang outside India?Yes. Choose your city and the calculation uses its local time zone.
